International Conference on Exploring Innovative Strategies for Poverty Eradication and Climate Change Mitigationin collaboration with India Development Coalition of America (IDCA)

 IIIM in collaboration with India Development Coalition of America (IDCA) organized 5th North India International Conference on “Exploring Innovative Strategies for Poverty Eradication and Climate Change Mitigation”, on 18th March, 2016.

The conference was inaugurated by Prof. Vijay Shankar Vyas, Emeritus Professor and Chairman, Governing Board, Institute of Development Studies, Jaipur. Dr. Samuel Mawunganidze, Chief, UNICEF Rajasthan was the Key Note Speaker for the inaugural ceremony. Dr. Mohan Jain, Founder & Trustee, IDCA welcomed all the guests and delegates. He gave a brief introduction of IDCA, focusing on the major contribution of IDCA in dropping social imbalances. Dr. Mohan Jain, in his address highlighted the role of social entrepreneurs towards alleviating the social issues by putting the less fortunate on a path towards a worthwhile life. He emphasized that, rather than leaving societal needs to the government or business sectors, social entrepreneurs can solve the problem by changing the system. The Chief Guest Prof. Vyas in his inaugural speech focused that agricultural and rural development strategies would benefit from increased collaboration between government research and extension organizations and nongovernmental development organizations. Dr. Samuel Mawunganidze highlighted the avenues of social entrepreneurship and shared his ideas and experiences of the grass root linkages to international level.

The conference dealt with two themes. The first set of interactions on the theme ‘Innovative Practices in Water and Health Care’, had renowned persons from Non - Profit Organizations who shared their best practices, and these included Dr. Pramila Sanjaya, Hon’ Advisor, Society for Integrated Development Activities, Research & Training (SIDART), Jaipur, Dr. Sunita Jhala, Secretary, GIRIJAN Swaichchik Sansthan, Jaipur, Dr. Arnavaz Manekji Havaewalaa, Prof.& HOD, Director, Pilot Study on Oral Health, Mumbai. The speakers briefed the audience about the work they perform in different domains for the underprivileged and answered queries raised by the participants.

Theme -2 was ‘Climate Change Mitigation, Education and Livelihood’ where speakers shared about the successful working models of their organizations and motivated students for their volunteering support. The speakers for this session were Dr. Kavita Mishra, Deputy Director, Basic Rights, Cecoedecon, Mr.R.D Sharma, Additional Director, Doosra Dashak.

The students presented a brief of the projects, which they took up while working for Non Government organizations. Eight teams came forward with a presentation of their work in the social sector. The top three presentations were rewarded with a cash prize of Rs.5000/-, Rs.3000/- and Rs.2000/- respectively in the valedictory session. Mr. Prahlad S Shekhawat, Director, Alternative Development & Research Centre presented various ideas to carry forward the conference proceedings experientially and discussed about growing avenues for social entrepreneurs.

The conference provided an interactive forum for the NGOs, Corporate representatives and students in finding innovative solutions for developing a holistic approach towards social responsibility, and combining education and business for social initiatives.
