Organ Donation

On September 16, 2016 IIIM in collaboration with YES BANK to support National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization -NOTTO organised an awareness program.

Dr. Suresh Badhan, Consultant, Coordination, NOTTO informed the students that National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) set up under Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. National Network division of NOTTO functions as apex centre for nation wide activities of coordination and networking for procurement and distribution of Organs and Tissues and registry of Organs and Tissues Donation and Transplant in the country.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Badhan said, “The act of donating one’s organs during one’s lifetime is the most appreciable deed one can do. It’s about living on when you are gone. With waiting lists getting longer, the gap between organ demand and availability burgeoning and helpless patients dying every day whilst waiting for a transplant, it is vital that more and more of us pledge for organ donation.”

Sir brought out the thought on how being an organ donor is an opportunity and not an obligation.
He with the help of a short film explained that a person can donate organs only in the case of brain death and that the organs need to be in a healthy condition. So if one is able to be an organ donor she/he is considered more fortunate to be able to have a chance to make their death meaningful by giving many others another chance of life.

Endorsing the need of public awareness and community engagement, he emphasized that the solution to organ shortage was possible only through systematic strengthening of the deceased donor programme.
