2 day UGC Sponsored National Level Seminar on New Directions in Literary Studies 29-30, 2010

A 2 day National Seminar on ‘New Directions in Literary Studies’ was organized by International College for Girls on January 29 & 30, 2010. Experts and students from all over the country participated in the Seminar to bridge the gap between literary studies and pedagogy. 

The objective of the Seminar was to raise and discuss issues related to the use of theory in the study of literature, to assess the contribution of theory to the study of literary texts in English, and to consider how some of these new ideas can be incorporated into the pedagogical practice in the Indian context, so that the study of literature can become a more useful and rewarding experience both for the teacher and the learner.  

The Chief Guest at the Inaugural Function was Prof.M.L.Raina, Former Professor, Panjab University, Chandigarh,  who began his address with the lines that- ‘The work of literature is to save your soul but make you worthy of it. I look upon literature in that light. ’Prof. Raina explained the distinction between literature and literary studies and emphasized the need to study and understand literature and literary studies in a global context.

During the Technical Sessions various Experts from all over the country like Prof. Gurupdesh Singh from Gurunanak Dev University , Amritsar, Prof. P.C.Kar, Director Centre for Contemporary Theory, Vadodara, Prof. Shormishtha Panja, University of Delhi, Delhi, Prof. M. Sridhar from Central University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad, Prof. Sudha Pandya from M.S.University, Vadodra discussed various aspects and dimensions of literary studies and  the critical theories of literature.

In the Valediction Ceremony, awards for best papers were giving to the participating  teachers and students of ICG presented a cultural programme. On the occasion, Dr. Ashok Gupta, Director, ICG thanked all the eminent guests and delegates. Emphasizing the benefits of the Seminar the Convenor of the Seminar and college Principal, Dr. Rakhi Gupta thanked all the Resource Persons for participating in the Seminar and sharing their vast knowledge as well as experiences thereby contributing to its success.
