Dear Parent,

As you are aware we have brought in some changes in the teaching-evaluation system keeping in mind the Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) introduced by the Central Board of Secondary Education. The same has been very well received by the students and the teachers.

As a part of CCE, we have conducted the initial level of evaluation i.e. Formative Assessment – I (FA-I) during the month of July, 2010. The performance of the students was evaluated by the teachers, their mistakes identified and remedials were done for the same in green ink by the students in consultation with the respective subject teachers. We hope that this revised methodology in the evaluation process will help us to further strengthen the teaching-learning process.

Your valuable suggestions and views on the same are welcome during the first Parent-Teacher-Meeting (PTM) scheduled on August 7, 2010 between 08.30 a.m. and 11.30 a.m.  We request you to make it convenient to attend the same for a healthy interaction with the teachers for improvement in the overall performance of your child.

The answer sheets of FA-1 for all the subjects have already been handed over to the students of Classes I to VIII. However for Classes IX and X the answer sheets of FA-I will be shown to the parents during the Parent-Teacher-Meet, which please note.

Thanking you,
Yours sincerely,

Dr. Ashok Gupta

Dated: April 12, 2010

Dear Parent,

I take this opportunity to share with you the examination reforms and Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation - CCE for Class IX and X introduced by Central Board of Secondary Education - CBSE.

The larger context of education is to prepare futuristic citizens for a meaningful and productive life in a globalized society.  Evaluation is a means of realizing the extent to which we have been successful in imparting such an education, which is also an indispensable part of the educational process.

External examinations “are largely inappropriate for the knowledge society of the 21st century and its need for innovative problem solvers”.  They make no allowance for different types of learners and learning environments inducing an in-ordinate level of anxiety and stress.

In view of the above and the need to look at the holistic assessment of the child, CBSE has introduced CCE – Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation in classes IX and X also.

This letter is being mailed to each one of you not to raise your anxiety or apprehensions, but to bring transparency and clarity in the new format being introduced.  Let me apprise you on the new evaluation system that would address most of your concerns:

Salient features of CCE

1.      Will reduce pre and post examination stress among the young students.

2.      Will reduce dropout rate due to less fear and performance related anxiety.

3.      Focus would be more on learning rather completing the course within the time frame.

4.      Emphasis on conceptual clarification through experiential learning in classrooms.

5.      Emphasis on making students physically fit, mentally alert and emotionally balanced.

6.      More time to develop their interests, hobbies and personality development.

7.      Enable students, teachers and parents to make informed choice of subjects in Class XI

8.      Motivating learning in a friendly environment instead of being under pressure.

9.      Equip the learners with life skills, creative and critical thinking skills, social skills, coping skills giving them a strong base when they enter the competitive world.

Operational Modalities of CCE

1.      Student’s performance assessment will be done using conventional numerical marking.

2.      Grades will be awarded on a 9 point scale indicating subject-wise performance.

3.      Subject-wise grades will be shown in the “Statement of Subject-wise Performance” to be issued to all students.

4.      The practice of declaring compartment/ fail shall be discontinued.

5.      Those candidates who obtain the qualifying grades (D and above) in at least 5 subjects including compulsory language, shall be awarded a Qualifying Certificate.

6.      Those students who have obtained grade E1 and E2 in a subject shall have an option to improve their performance through subsequent attempts.

7.      Students getting Qualifying Certificates will be eligible for admission in higher class

8.      Those students whose grades are less than D in at least 5 subjects that includes compulsory language are not eligible for admission in Class XI.

The students will be assessed through the CCE internally by the school as per the strengthened new scheme. Class IX will have two terms i.e. from April 2010 to Sept 2010 and Oct 2010 to Mar 2011.

CBSE will provide flexibility to these students in Senior Secondary Schools also to appear in Board’s external (pen and paper written /online) examination.  The students will have an option to opt for the following tests, on demand.

Proficiency Test

The students who wish to assess themselves vis-a-vis their peers or for self motivation will be allowed to appear in an on Demand (pen and paper/online) Proficiency Test.

Aptitude Test

Board proposes an opportunity to students to undertake Aptitude test twice, once each at the end of Class IX and X.  This would assist the students, teachers and parents in deciding on the choice of subjects in Class XI.

Admission to Class XI

CCE Certificate will form the basis of admission to Class XI. Aptitude Test, Scholastic Performance and Co-Scholastic Achievements will be given weightage. Preference will be given to students seeking admission in Class XI from the same school over students coming from other schools.

We are hopeful of your cooperation in introducing the new evaluation system for our students. In this regard, if you have any further queries or would like to any clarifications, we suggest you to write back to us or alternatively address your issues/concerns directly to the Chairman, CBSE by superscribing “CBSE Examination Reform” on the top of the envelop.

You may also log on to www.cbse.nic.in to read more details related to CCE which is being updated by CBSE on a regular basis.

With warm regards,

Yours sincerely,

Dr. Ashok Gupta

Dear Parent,

Keeping pace with the evolving trends and our consistent endeavour and quest to provide quality education to the students, we plan to introduce the following changes in our Academic and Examination policies effective Session 2010-11.

The academic year will be divided into two terms. The first term will extend from April to September 2010 whereas the second term from October 2010 to March 2011. Each term will consist of two Formative Assessments (FAs) and one Summative Assessment (SA).

Formative Assessment: it will be used to monitor the learning progress of the student. This need not be a pen and paper test. The student may be assessed through Orals, Group discussions, and Home assignments etc.

Summative Assessment: this will be taken by the students at the end of the term to demonstrate the “SUM” of what they have learnt during the term.

·          The dates and duration of the Formative Assessments (FAs) will be intimated to you well in advance. If due to any reason the student is not able to take the Formative Assessment then the same would be given on the next attendance in the school, without prior notice.  The syllabus will be informed well in advance through a diary note.  Timely information will also be posted on the school website, hence kindly keep a check on the same.

·          The question paper formats and all such relevant information related to Summative Assessment will be communicated to you from time to time.

·          After the evaluation of FAs and SAs the remedial step would be that the subject teacher will discuss the question paper with the students and the students will be asked to do all the corrections in green ink after which the answer scripts will be sent to you.

1.      There will be a permanent ‘zero-period’ in the time table during the entire academic year. The same will be utilized for various activities, rehearsals, practices and pending work.

2.      It has also been decided to introduce Japanese (only spoken language) for Class V students.

3.      We are also in the process of introducing “My Profile” for the students of Class VI-VIII. Maintaining this profile would create “self-awareness” in the student wherein he/she would be able to assess him/her self. This profile would help the students keep a record of their achievement during the academic year.

If you have any queries on the above, please feel free to reach us during school working hours or alternatively through the “Feedback Button” on our school website – www.icfia.org
