Dear Parent,
I take this
opportunity to share with you the examination
reforms and Continuous and Comprehensive
Evaluation - CCE for Class IX and X introduced
by Central Board of Secondary Education - CBSE.
The larger context
of education is to prepare futuristic citizens for a
meaningful and productive life in a globalized
society. Evaluation is a means of realizing the
extent to which we have been successful in imparting
such an education, which is also an indispensable
part of the educational process.
External
examinations “are largely inappropriate for the
knowledge society of the 21st century and
its need for innovative problem solvers”. They
make no allowance for different types of learners
and learning environments inducing an in-ordinate
level of anxiety and stress.
In view of the
above and the need to look at the holistic
assessment of the child, CBSE has introduced
CCE – Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation in
classes IX and X also.
This letter is
being mailed to each one of you not to raise your
anxiety or apprehensions, but to bring transparency
and clarity in the new format being introduced. Let
me apprise you on the new evaluation system that
would address most of your concerns:
Salient features of CCE
1.
Will reduce pre and post examination stress among
the young students.
2.
Will reduce dropout rate due to less fear and
performance related anxiety.
3.
Focus would be more on learning rather completing
the course within the time frame.
4.
Emphasis on conceptual clarification through
experiential learning in classrooms.
5.
Emphasis on making students physically fit, mentally
alert and emotionally balanced.
6.
More time to develop their interests, hobbies and
personality development.
7.
Enable students, teachers and parents to make
informed choice of subjects in Class XI
8.
Motivating learning in a friendly environment
instead of being under pressure.
9.
Equip the learners with life skills, creative and
critical thinking skills, social skills, coping
skills giving them a strong base when they enter the
competitive world.
Operational Modalities of CCE
1.
Student’s performance assessment will be done using
conventional numerical marking.
2.
Grades
will be awarded on a 9 point scale indicating
subject-wise performance.
3.
Subject-wise grades will be shown in the “Statement
of Subject-wise Performance” to be issued to all
students.
4.
The
practice of declaring compartment/ fail shall be
discontinued.
5.
Those
candidates who obtain the qualifying grades (D and
above) in at least 5 subjects including compulsory
language, shall be awarded a Qualifying
Certificate.
6.
Those
students who have obtained grade E1 and E2 in a
subject shall have an option to improve their
performance through subsequent attempts.
7.
Students
getting Qualifying Certificates will be eligible for
admission in higher class
8.
Those
students whose grades are less than D in at least 5
subjects that includes compulsory language are not
eligible for admission in Class XI.
The students will be assessed through the CCE
internally by the school as per the strengthened new
scheme. Class IX will have two terms i.e. from April
2010 to Sept 2010 and Oct 2010 to Mar 2011.
CBSE will provide flexibility to these students in
Senior Secondary Schools also to appear in Board’s
external (pen and paper written /online)
examination. The students will have an option to
opt for the following tests, on demand.
Proficiency Test
The
students who wish to assess themselves vis-a-vis
their peers or for self motivation will be allowed
to appear in an on Demand (pen and paper/online)
Proficiency Test.
Aptitude
Test
Board
proposes an opportunity to students to undertake
Aptitude test twice, once each at the end of
Class IX and X. This would assist the students,
teachers and parents in deciding on the choice of
subjects in Class XI.
Admission to Class XI
CCE
Certificate will form the basis of admission to
Class XI. Aptitude Test, Scholastic Performance and
Co-Scholastic Achievements will be given weightage.
Preference will be given to students seeking
admission in Class XI from the same school over
students coming from other schools.
We are
hopeful of your cooperation in introducing the new
evaluation system for our students. In this regard,
if you have any further queries or would like to any
clarifications, we suggest you to write back to us
or alternatively address your issues/concerns
directly to the Chairman, CBSE by superscribing
“CBSE Examination Reform” on the top of the envelop.
You may
also log on to
www.cbse.nic.in to read more details related to
CCE which is being updated by CBSE on a regular
basis.
With
warm regards,
Yours
sincerely,
