Dear
Parent,
I take this opportunity to
share with you the examination reforms and Continuous and
Comprehensive Evaluation - CCE for Class IX and X
introduced by Central Board of Secondary Education - CBSE.
The larger context of
education is to prepare futuristic citizens for a meaningful
and productive life in a globalized society. Evaluation is
a means of realizing the extent to which we have been
successful in imparting such an education, which is also an
indispensable part of the educational process.
External examinations “are
largely inappropriate for the knowledge society of the 21st
century and its need for innovative problem solvers”.
They make no allowance for different types of learners and
learning environments inducing an in-ordinate level of
anxiety and stress.
In view of the above and
the need to look at the holistic assessment of the
child, CBSE has introduced CCE – Continuous and
Comprehensive Evaluation in classes IX and X also.
This letter is being
mailed to each one of you not to raise your anxiety or
apprehensions, but to bring transparency and clarity in the
new format being introduced. Let me apprise you on the new
evaluation system that would address most of your concerns:
Salient features of CCE
1.
Will reduce pre and post examination stress among the young
students.
2.
Will reduce dropout rate due to less fear and performance
related anxiety.
3.
Focus would be more on learning rather than completing the
course within the time frame.
4.
Emphasis on conceptual clarification through experiential
learning in classrooms.
5.
Emphasis on making students physically fit, mentally alert
and emotionally balanced.
6.
More time to develop their interests, hobbies and
personality development.
7.
Enable students, teachers and parents to make informed
choice of subjects in Class XI
8.
Motivating learning in a friendly environment instead of
being under pressure.
9.
Equip the learners with life skills, creative and critical
thinking skills, social skills, coping skills giving them a
strong base when they enter the competitive world.
Promotion Policy
for class IX (2011-12) under the scheme of CCE:
I.
General
a)
The year-end subject wise grades of a student in Class IX
will be calculated on the basis of performance in all
formative and summative assessments in scholastic areas as
well as grades obtained in co-scholastic areas.
b)
In
scholastic areas, all the five main subjects i.e. two
languages, Mathematics, Science and Social Science will be
considered at par for promotion purpose.
c)
Termwise weightage of marks will be as follows:
First
Term : FA1 (10%) + FA2 (10%) + SA1
(30%) = 50%
Second
Term : FA1 (10%) + FA2 (10%) + SA2
(30%) = 50%
Formative
Assessment : FA1 (10%)+FA2(10%)+FA3(10%) + FA4
(10%) = 40%
Summative
Assessment : SA1 (30%) + SA2 (30%) = 60%
d)
CGPA (Cumulative grade point average) will be provided
excluding additional 6th subject as per the
Scheme of Studies.
e)
The certificate of School Based Assessment issued by CBSE to
the students after they pass out class X in 2012-13 will
reflect the overall CGPA calculated collectively for IX
2011-12 and X 2012-13.
II)
Weightage to co-scholastic areas for Promotion Purpose:
a)
The grades obtained in different co-scholastic areas will be
converted into grade points by using the following
conversion scale:
A+
--------------- 5
A
----------------- 4
B+
--------------- 3
B
----------------- 2
C
----------------- 1
b)
Based on the total grade points obtained by the students in
co-scholastic areas, their grades in the scholastic areas
(Part I of the Report Book) would be upscaled to a maximum
of two subjects as per the board norms.
c)
A
star will appear on every upscaled grade to indicate that
the final grade has been arrived after including the
achievement of the student in co-scholastic areas.
d)
The benefit of upscaling will be given in the subject(s) in
which the student has secured the lowest grade.
III)
Promotion to Higher Class
a)
Every student is required to get a qualifying grade D or
above in all the subjects excluding 6th
additional subject as per the Scheme of Studies for the
purpose of promotion to next class.
b)
A
student getting E1 or E2 grade in
scholastic areas in one or more subjects will have to
improve his / her performance in one subsequent attempt to
obtain qualifying grade D in these subjects.
c)
If
a student fails to obtain qualifying grade D in one or more
subjects, even after adding grade points from co-scholastic
areas and after availing one improvement chance, he/she will
be required to repeat the same class during the next
academic year.
d)
Syllabus for improvement examination would be same as that
of SA-II
