A Guest Lecture by Prof. Ernest Schaumann, Professor, Germany was organized by the Department of Chemistry on the 18th of February, 2008. Professor Schaumann talked on the topic, ‘What is special about organosulphur chemistry’. The lecture began with a discussion on basic and some general rules for the main functional groups containing sulphur. The Professor explained in detail sulfonium salts, sulphur yields, oxidation of sulphur, sulhur stabilizing positive charges, sulphur as chiral control element and also gave a brief overview on thiocarbonayl chemistry.

The beneficiaries of the lecture included the faculty and all the students of the Department of chemistry
