Lecture-cum Demonstration by
Santoor Maestro Abhay Rustum Sopori

ICG on the aegis of SPIC MACAY organized a Lecture-cum Demonstration by renowned Santoor Maestro- ‘Abhay Rustum Sopori’ on the 18th of January 2008 in the College.

Abhay Rustum Sopori has a profound sense of music that he has inherited from the traditional Sufiana Gharana. The son of legendary music composer and santoor maestro Pandit Bhajan Sopori and the grandson of Pandit Shamboo Nath Sopori, Abhay Rustum Sopori is widely credited with institutionalizing music education in India’s northern most state-Kashmir. He has been conferred several national and state awards, including the prestigious Sangeet Bhushan Award and the Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar 2007.

Shri Abhay’s performances demonstrate a keen sense of Vocal and Instrumental techniques, which is the essence of his style. A unique quality of his presentation is that he sings the composition along with its instrumental rendering.

The programme began with ‘Raga Aheer Bhairav’ followed by melodious presentations- ‘Sagri rain jagat…balma tum bin’, ‘Jago re bhai jago………..’ He was accompanied on tabla by Shri Mithilesh Jha, and on Sur Santoor by Ms. Maneet Kaur. The Santoor Maestro also explained the features of his instrument to the students.

The spellbinding presentation was highly appreciated by the audience.
