Lecture on Prevalence and Prevention of
Diabetes and other Common Diseases

 

 

 

In the present times many diseases are emerging due to altered environment, diet and life style patterns. To make the students aware about the risks of increasing occurrence of diseases like Diabetes Mellitus, Osteoporosis, Obesity, Heart diseases etc. a guest lecture was organized by the Dept. of Home Science on 26th October 2007 in the A.V. Hall. The resource person for the lecture was Dr. S.K. Sharma a well known Endocrinologist of Jaipur. He explained the causes for the occurrence of Diabetes mellitus, Osteoporosis, Obesity, Heart Diseases, Acne and Hirsutism, the etiology, risk and preventive measures for all. The types of DM in people and reasons behind the increasing morbidity rates were discussed with the students. The major risk factors responsible for the development of diabetes mellitus were obesity, consumption of fatty foods, availability of fast and junk foods in abundance and above all less physical activity. Many physiological factors such as resistance to insulin hormone, stress etc also contributed towards the development its development.  He showed the comparative evaluation of the body build of an Indian and an American in terms of fat and muscle components. He emphasized on the role and importance of consumption of fruits and vegetables in the human diet. He complemented the lecture with an eye catching and illustrative power point presentation. The session proved to be a fruitful and enriching for all those present.
