Lecture on ‘Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome’

A guest lecture was organized by the Dept. of Home Science (Foods and Nutrition) on Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) on the 19th of September, 2007. Dr. Gunjan Jain, Proprietor and renowned fertility expert, Jain Fertility Centre was the resource person for the lecture. She tried to bring awareness among students about a very important disease found very commonly among teenage and adolescent girls. She explained the major symptoms of this disease. After explaining the basic physiology of female reproductive system and the pathological changes which take place in the ovaries of female reproductive system she talked about the mal-development of various follicles in ovaries which could lead to delayed and improper menstrual cycle With the help of PPT presentation she depicted the main effects of this disorder on various body parts, and consequences of this disease like loss of hair, obesity, dark pigmentation and dominance of male hormones and associated effects. She explained the major life style factors which lead to the occurrence of ovarian disorders like frequent consumption of fried foods, soft drinks, sedentary life style with hardly or no physical exercise, consumptions of hard drinks, smoking etc. If these factors were controlled, along with regular health check up, then such disorders could be prevented. She informed that proper medical treatment is also available at many medical institutes and advised that all the young and adult women should go and consult a gynecologist or any medical resource person about the general health of the all body systems.

It was an interactive session thus all the students shared their problem related to menstrual cycle and general eating disorders. She communicated with all and willingly solved their queries. It was a very fruitful and interesting session for all.
