Guest Lecture on Quantum Cryptography

Department of Physics, ICG, organized a Guest Lecture on Quantum Cryptography on the 17th of July, 2007 in the AV Hall. The resource person was Prof. Dipan Kumar Ghosh, Professor of Physics in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai. His area of specialization is ‘Theoretical Aspects of Magnetism’.

Prof. Ghosh talked at length about cryptography which is the ‘science of coding and decoding’. He introduced the concept to the audience and also traced the history of cryptography. He gave interesting illustrations as that of Julius Caesar who shifted the letters of alphabets, three places right for the purpose of coding. Queen Elizabeth I had opened a school of espionage which engaged in using this art. The Queen of Scotland specialized in encrypting messages. He further dealt with restricted algorithm and then with public key algorithm. He also explained Fermat’s little theorem, Quantum ideas, BB-84 protocol, etc. to the students.

The beneficiaries of the lecture included the faculty and all the students of the Department of Physics and BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications).
