Dept. of Management
Studies and P.G. Studies in Commerce & Mgt. organized a Guest
Lecture-cum-Workshop on Intercultural Communication for
the students of BBM, MIB and MHRM with the purpose of making the
students aware of the interpersonal skills needed for establishing and
maintaining rapport with the people of different cultures and regions.
The Resource Person for
the Session I was Professor Neva Cebron, Faculty of Humanities,
University of Primorska, Koper, Slovenia. Prof. Neva addressed the
ICGians on the ‘Methods and Approaches to Developing Intercultural
Communicative Competence: Cross-Cultural vs. Intercultural
Communication’. She referred to approaches and projects like-
CCBC (Cross-Cultural Business Communication), Labicum (Language as a
bridge to intercultural understanding) and Permit developed by various
researchers in the field within USA and Europe to teach business
communication skills to the young learners. She further added that in
this era of globalization it is necessary for us that we understand work
environment which fosters tolerance and intercultural empathy.
Session II comprised of a
presentation on Cross Cultural Business Communication Project by Prof.
Jagtar Chawla, Head, Dept. of English, The Bhopal School of Social
Sciences. The project will enable the students to learn about the
workings of a company (interdependence of various departments in
developing and selling a product or service) as well as gain practice in
a near-realistic situation dealing with international suppliers and
customers. This includes presenting the company to prospective business
partners (making students, their company and their product known and
designing an advertisement), writing and receiving enquiries, offers and
orders and dealing with financial and transportation matters and
adjustments. Dr. Chawla shared her valuable experience in the area of
rising intercultural awareness with respect to methods and approaches
used in the classroom and in terms of students’ response.

Management, thanked Prof. Neva Cebron and Prof. Jagtar Chawla for
sparing time and sharing their experiences with the participants.
